“Kashi is not merely a city — it is the place where the cycle of life and death finds its end. According to Hindu scripture, Lord Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ears of those who depart here, granting liberation from rebirth. Cremation at Manikarnika Ghat is moksha.”
Why Families Come to Varanasi
Varanasi — The Sacred City for Hindu Last Rites
Varanasi — also called Kashi, Banaras, and the City of Light — is unlike any other destination for funeral services. People do not simply come here because they live here. Families travel from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and from countries across the world — specifically to perform the final rites of a loved one at this sacred city.
There are three main reasons families come to Varanasi for rituals: (1) Cremation at Manikarnika or Harishchandra Ghat — for families who wish their loved one to attain moksha through cremation at the most sacred burning ghat in the world. (2) Asthi Visarjan — immersion of the ashes in the Ganga after cremation elsewhere. (3) Pind Daan and Shradh — ancestral rituals performed for the peace of departed souls, either immediately after death or during Pitru Paksha.
Anthyesti handles all three — including the logistics of transporting the body to Varanasi from any Indian city and coordinating the ghat slot, pandit, and all rituals on arrival. For NRI families who cannot travel to India, we also offer online Pind Daan and Asthi Visarjan services with live video.
Who This Service Is For
- Families transporting a body to Varanasi from another city for cremation at Manikarnika or Harishchandra Ghat — road, train from any railway junction, or air from LBS Airport (VNS).
- Families coming to Varanasi for Asthi Visarjan — immersion of ashes after cremation was performed elsewhere. Pandit, ghat coordination, and urn provided.
- Families performing Pind Daan or Shradh — in Varanasi for the first time or during Pitru Paksha, who need a reliable pandit and complete ritual coordination without the stress of navigating the ghats independently.
- NRI families — who cannot travel to India but need Pind Daan, Asthi Visarjan, or Shradh performed at Varanasi on their behalf with live video.
- Call +91-9883318181 — tell us what you need (cremation at the ghat, Asthi Visarjan, Pind Daan, or body transport to Varanasi) and our coordinator plans everything in the same call.
The Two Sacred Cremation Ghats
Manikarnika Ghat & Harishchandra Ghat — Anthyesti Arranges Cremation at Both

Manikarnika Ghat — Mahashmashan
Manikarnika Ghat is known as the Mahashmashan — the Great Cremation Ground. The sacred fire here has reportedly been burning for over 3,000 years, never extinguished. It is the most spiritually significant cremation site in Hinduism. According to belief, Lord Shiva whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ears of those cremated here — granting moksha, liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Thousands of cremations happen here every year, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Bodies arrive from across India and from abroad specifically to be cremated here.
- Anthyesti's on-ground Varanasi coordinator waits at the ghat and secures the next available slot — so families arriving do not have to navigate the queue independently. Head is shaved, Ganga bath taken, and the ritual fire taken from the eternal flame.

Harishchandra Ghat — Oldest Ghat
Harishchandra Ghat is named after the legendary king Harishchandra, known for his ultimate truthfulness and sacrifice. It is one of Varanasi's oldest ghats and the second cremation ghat on the Ganga. Slightly less crowded than Manikarnika, it is the recommended choice when faster arrangements are needed — typically shorter wait times. Both traditional wood pyre cremation and electric cremation are available at Harishchandra Ghat, unlike Manikarnika which has wood pyre only.
- Families who need faster arrangements, families from Christian or other communities who prefer electric cremation, or those arriving late in the day often choose Harishchandra Ghat. Anthyesti recommends the right ghat based on your arrival time and preferences.
Sacred Rituals & Services
All Varanasi Ritual Services Anthyesti Provides
Cremation at Manikarnika / Harishchandra Ghat
Full end-to-end cremation service at either ghat — hearse van from Varanasi railway station or airport to the ghat, on-ground slot wait, pandit, head-shaving ritual, Ganga bath, sacred fire, wood pyre ceremony, and ash collection.
Asthi Visarjan in the Ganga
Immersion of ashes (asthi) in the sacred Ganga at Varanasi after cremation was performed in another city. Anthyesti provides the pandit, urn for ashes, ghat access, and complete ritual coordination. Also done at Dashashwamedh Ghat and Assi Ghat.
Pind Daan in Varanasi (Kashi)
Pind Daan performed by our Varanasi pandits on the sacred ghats — full ritual with rice-ball offerings (pinda), black sesame, honey, and all samagri. In Kashi, Pind Daan is believed to give the soul liberation from all ancestral debts.
Anna Shradh — Three-Generation Blessing
Anna Shradh performed in Varanasi to receive the blessings of three generations — Pitamah (grandfather), Prapitamah (great-grandfather), and Vridha Prapitamah. Pandit, all food preparation (cooked rice, dal, vegetables), and ritual coordination included.
Samvatsarikam — First Death Anniversary
The Shradh ritual performed on the first death anniversary of the deceased soul. Varanasi is considered the most auspicious place to perform Samvatsarikam. Anthyesti arranges pandit, full samagri, ghat access, and all rituals.
Pitru Paksha Shradh — October 2026
The most auspicious 16-day fortnight for ancestral rituals. Pitru Paksha 2026: September 27 to October 11. Varanasi sees the highest ritual activity during this period. Anthyesti provides advance booking for pandits and ghat slots during Pitru Paksha.
Step by Step
How Anthyesti Arranges Varanasi Funeral Services — From Your City to the Ghat
Whether you are in Delhi, Mumbai, or Dubai — one call to Anthyesti sets the entire Varanasi arrangement in motion from both ends simultaneously.

Call +91-9883318181 — Tell Us Your Situation
Our coordinator asks: where is the body currently, which city you are in, which service you need (cremation at the ghat, Asthi Visarjan, Pind Daan, or Shradh), and your timeline. For body transport to Varanasi, we begin arranging transport from your city and simultaneously brief our Varanasi ground coordinator to prepare for arrival — both ends moving in the same call.

Transport to Varanasi — Train, Air, or Road
If the body is being transported to Varanasi: we arrange the hearse van or dead body ambulance from your city, documentation (NOC, freezer box or embalming as required), railway freight booking or air cargo via Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (VNS) or the nearest airport, and station/airport receiving at Varanasi. Families can travel on the same train. Train from Delhi: ~8 hours. From Mumbai: ~24+ hours. From Lucknow: ~4 hours.

Receiving at Varanasi — Hearse Van to Ghat
Anthyesti's Varanasi coordinator receives the body at Varanasi Junction station or Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport and arranges the hearse van to the ghat. If the family is also arriving, we coordinate pickup from the station or airport. The coordinator navigates the narrow lanes (gallis) approaching Manikarnika Ghat — which vehicles cannot reach directly — using a traditional bier procession.

Ghat Coordination — Slot, Pandit, Wood, and Ritual
At the ghat, our coordinator secures the next available slot (no advance booking is possible at either ghat), arranges the pandit, procures the sanctified wood for the pyre, assists the eldest son or family member with the head-shaving and Ganga bath ritual, and guides the family through every step of the cremation ceremony — Mukhagni (lighting the sacred fire from the eternal flame), the full Antim Sanskar, and ash collection after approximately 3–5 hours.

Post-Cremation — Asthi Visarjan, Pind Daan & Onward Support
After cremation, Anthyesti coordinates Asthi Visarjan in the Ganga at the appropriate ghat — Dashashwamedh, Assi, or others. If Pind Daan and Anna Shradh are to be performed in Varanasi, our pandit guides the family through these rituals on the same day or the following day. We arrange accommodation guidance, local transport, and remain available at +91-9883318181 throughout your stay in Varanasi.
